To the entire HSU community,

First, please let me express my sincerest apologies. I just picked up the Nov. 4 Lumberjack and was shocked to be greeted on the cover with “Hostile Gospel”. As I read the story I could not help but be dismayed, disappointed, and sincerely sorry for the events that transpired in the story. As a Christian I would like to apologize for all the hurt and negativity of those actions performed by Mr. Bourgault.

Unfortunately, this has been an all too common occurrence around the country. I cannot say this enough, Christianity is not supposed to be a religion or faith of hate! And yet, people constantly use the texts that we hold dearly to twist out a message of hate.

Christianity is first and foremost a religion and faith of love! It is built on love and forgiveness! In the Bible it even says this: 1 John 4:19-21 “We love because he [God] first loved us. If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.” In Matthew 22:39 Jesus himself says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” In one of the most famous Bible verses, John 3:16, we hear, “For God so loved the world...” And in 1 John 4:8 we get, “Whoever does not love does not know God, BECAUSE GOD IS LOVE.” (emphasis added).

Unfortunately, this part of the Christian faith was absent from Mr. Bourgault’s message. The foundation of Christianity is this basic belief: we are all sinners and stand condemned, but God because and through His LOVE saved us by His Son, Jesus.

The point of this all this is that Christianity is supposed to be about forgiveness and love. And while Mr. Bourgault says some things that Christians may believe he in no way portrayed what Christianity is in an accurate manner.

Again, as a Christian I apologize for his actions and I would also like to apologize to anybody who might have been hurt or offended by what he said or what others like him have said or done. I in no way approve of spreading hate or hurt and trying to disguise it as religious beliefs.

Again, I’m sorry.
