Stanford's baseball team left their books at home this past weekend and brought bats instead. Stanford swept Humboldt State, bringing it to seven straight loses for the 'Jacks baseball team.
With three losses last weekend, the 'Jacks fall to 3-6 in their division and don't believe they have a chance at making the playoffs.
The 'Jacks have this weekend off, but play away against UC Davis on Saturday, April 26, and Sunday. April 27. This is the first time the 'Jacks play UC Davis this season.
They will turn to junior Kyle McManus to start the first game as pitcher when they play UC Davis.
The 'Jacks were not thrilled about getting swept at home for the second straight week, and the team was upset about their performance after the loss on Sunday.
The 'Jacks had trouble scoring again this weekend, and only managed five total runs in three games combined.
In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, both teams scored runs in the
first inning. Stanford separated themselves from the 'Jacks by scoring six more runs in the following inning.
'Jacks catcher David Stone led off the bottom of the second with an infield single and managed to steal second and third base. But Stanford's starting pitcher struck out the next three batters to retire the side.
This was a common occurrence for the 'Jacks
They didn't have trouble getting their lead runners on and even moving them into scoring position. They just couldn't get them to score.
Senior coach Peter Vinny Farrow said, "If we scored runs by getting to third we would be awesome."
Farrow thinks the 'Jacks are a good team playing poorly rather then a bad team just playing bad, and said, "Sometimes it doesn't even seem like we show up."
At times the 'Jacks' pitching and defense worked well together. In one Inning, a routine ground-out to shortstop was followed by a strikeout. Junior center fielder Barry Lowry closed out the inning by making a diving catch in shallow center.
At other times they did not look so hot. Stanford took advantage of defensive
errors the 'Jacks made and scored in bunches while the Jacks never put together a big rally of their own. Junior outfielder Omar Garcia said, "The biggest thing is getting rallies going; if we get a couple guys on, we
should be able to compete with everyone else."
