The Humboldt State Lumberjacks' men's basketball team now stands only one game behind the No. 1-ranked San Bernardino Coyotes.
Saturday night's 83-77 victory over the California State Los Angeles Eagles snapped the Jacks previous three-game loosing streak.
The Jacks not only controlled the tip of the game but they controlled the pace of the game as they viciously fought for the victory.
Devin Peal scored 29 points and six rebounds, and Cy Vandermeer added 17 points. The high scoring helped lead the Jacks to a victory after suffering a loss to the Cal State Dominquez Toros the night before.
Senior forward Devin Peal said it was his relentless attack of the basket that allowed him to get out there and execute the plays the way he did.
When asked how this game was different from the previous night's game, senior guard Grayson Moyer said, "We came out and finished in the second half. We got the lead and kept the lead."
Leading the Golden Eagles for the night was senior guard Vincent Camper, who finished the game with 28 points in an attempt for a comeback victory.
Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, Camper's 28 points weren't enough to size up to the 'Jacks' four players finishing in double figures.
Joining Peal and Vandermeer in double digits were senior guards Will Sheufelt and Moyer who both finished the night with 12 points each. Moyer also added a game-high seven assists.
The first half of the game was dominated by the 'Jacks as they executed the ball into the post, giving the big men like Peal and Vandermeer open opportunities to make baskets.
With a little over three minutes remaining in the half, junior forward Nick Green stole the ball from Eagle opponent Christofer Hart and lobbed the ball to Sheufelt for an easy basket.
When asked why he passed the ball instead of going for the open shot, Green said he wanted to draw the defense and pass it to Sheufelt for the easy layup.
The 'Jacks not only dominated from the inside but they dominated from outside as well. Moyer hit 2-4 from behind the three-point range helping the 'Jacks bury a 10-point lead at the half.
The 'Jacks hustle didn't stop in the first half, but carried all the way up to the second half. As they continued to play good defense, they hindered the Golden Eagles from claiming a potential victory.
When asked about the team's overall performance, Green said, "We played really hard from our starters to the bench. We brought out our energy to win".
With this victory under their belt, the 'Jacks now prepare for their next game which will take place Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the East Gym as they host the Sonoma State Seawolves.
After three consecutive weeks of playing in front of the home crowd the 'Jacks will have a one-game road trip down to San Diego, Calif. as they take on the UC San Diego Tritons Feb. 8 at 7:30pm
