To the Editor:

Governor Ronald Reagan was not popular at UC Berkeley where I was a student at the time. I can remember signing a Recall Ronald Reagan petition. One of his famous quotations was: "You see one redwood tree, you've seen them all," which did not endear him to environmentalists.

When Caltrans was building an off-ramp at Humboldt State, they demolished the Lutheran Church and cut some trees. They planned to cut a large redwood tree, but Humboldt State students begged to save it. Caltrans said that the tree would die because redwood trees grow in groves. They need each other to hold humidity and for wind protection. The tree was spared and the students named it the "Ronald Reagan Memorial Tree." The tree still stands, but as you can see, it is dying at the top. However, it has outlived Ronald Reagan.

Sincerely,
