In front of a sold-out crowd, the Humboldt State men's basketball team came out ready to play against the Afghanistan National team from the time the first whistle was blown.

The Afghanistan National Team was unable to size up to the No. 6 ranked Humboldt State Lumberjacks. The 'Jacks showcased a sensational start on Thursday night in the East Gym, throttling the Afghanistan National Team 94-72.

"Nice little tune up game for us," senior guard Grayson Moyer said. "[This is] the first time we have been on the court playing someone other than ourselves."

Even though the 'Jacks came up on top with a win, Moyer said there are a lot of things the team still needs to work on.

Five 'Jacks finished the night in double-digit points, showcasing their ability to score. Senior guard Will Sheufelt led way, scoring 16 points. 12 of those were scored from behind the 3-point line.

Following Sheufelt was senior forward Devin Peal who scored 14 points. Freshman guard Ernie Spada added 13; senior center Cy Vandermeer had 11, and junior guard Efren Del Rio finished with 10 points.

Spada finished the night with a game-high of seven assists. Moyer and Vandermeer tied for the team lead with five rebounds apiece.

In response to what he and his teammates need to improve upon before the season opener, Peal said the team needs to works on, "defense and rebounding."

The 'Jacks played a hard and strong two halves, never giving the Afghanistan National Team an opportunity to change the momentum of the game. Going into halftime, the 'Jacks had a 21-point lead over their opponents.

Humboldt State played with consistent ball movement from the outside and good hustle from the big men from in the inside. Even though the 'Jacks were continually hammered on from inside the post, they still came back fighting strong.

Offensively, the 'Jacks had everything under control. Humboldt State made half of its three-point shots, shooting 12 of 24 from behind the 3-point range.

When asked what he thinks are the strengths and weakness of the team, Sheufelt said, "Big men are our strengths. Defense and turnovers are [our] weakness".

Looking from the outside in, former player Jeremiah Ward said, "The team looked fabulous. They work well as a team." He also added that everybody on this year's squad is athletic.

The 2007-08 season officially kicks off on Nov. 16, when Humboldt State will travel to Seattle to take on the Seattle University Redhawks in the Elgin Baylor Classic. The following day the 'Jacks will take on St. Martin's University.

Come and support the 'Jacks when they return after their two-game road trip for their home opener game against the Southern Oregon University Raiders. The game is scheduled for Nov. 20 and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the East Gym.
