The Humboldt women's volleyball team gave it their all against nationally-ranked UC San Diego during last Friday's home match, but lost in the fifth and final match.
After losing the first two games 30-17 and 30-20, the 'Jacks pulled through with a 30-28 win in the third game.
The crowd roared and hollered as Olivia Solomon contributed three kills in the third game.
Megan Helms is a Humboldt State senior and fan of the volleyball team. "Things started to get really exciting in the third and fourth games," she said. "The score was close and the girls really capitalized on San Diego's mistakes."
Humboldt took a 30-23 win in the fourth game against UC San Diego with help from junior setter Liz Shannon, who scored four consecutive points off of her serves.
The women rallied in sweat and pride for the fifth and final game. Humboldt lost the match 15-7, dropping its record to 9-15 overall and 5-11 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. The players, coaches and fans were upset with the loss after such a hard fought match by the 'Jacks.
Head Coach James Kealalio said he is proud of the team for putting up such a hard fight and taking the match to a fifth game after losing the first two.
The players and coaches were happy with their efforts on Friday. Kealalio said, "Our win-loss record doesn't show how hard we worked and how successful our season has been."
Even against nationally ranked teams, players from Humboldt State have shown both team and individual successes this season. Sophomore middle blocker Danielle Wells broke a school record on Friday for single blocks in a season. She contributed ten blocks during the match against San Diego and now has 125 blocks with one game left to go.
"I'm so proud of Danielle and the rest of the players' hard work this season," said Kealalio.
The women's volleyball team plays their final match against Cal State Dominguez Hills this Saturday in Carson.
