Coming off a successful 2006-07 season, the 'Jacks return home to tip off the 2007-08 season in their first exhibition game against the Afghanistan National team Nov. 8 at 7:30 in the East Gym.
Returning from last year are veteran seniors Grayson Moyer, Carlos Corral. Devin Peal, Will Sheufelt, and Cy Vandermeer. The team also has incoming recruits that should help lead the 'Jacks to a victorious season.
Humboldt State has a lot of experience under its belt with returning five seniors returning from last year's successful squad. The team has high hopes as they enter the season ranked No.6 in the Division-II preseason poll. When asked how he felt about the high preseason ranking, Moyer said, "Excited, but we will have a bulls-eye on our back. We will have to come out and play hard every game"
Freshman forward Will Petty is also excited about being ranked No.6, but isn't sure what to expect as a freshman.
Last season the 'Jacks ended their season 26-4, the best winning percentage in the program's history. Even though the 'Jacks had four players finish in double figures, they fell short of the West Regional title as they lost to the San Bernardino Coyotes 66-68. It was a close match as both teams fought for the title, but in the end the Coyotes came up on top.
Leading the 'Jacks that night was senior guard Grayson Moyer with 21 points. Guard Jeremiah Ward and center Kevin Johnson finished with 16 and 15 points respectively. Forward Devin Peal had 14 points in the loss, which broke their 15-game winning streak and marked their first lost at home of the season.
The west regional title wasn't the only thing the 'Jacks lost that night. It was also the final game for Johnson and Ward, two of the 'Jacks.
Not only were they leading scores but they were significant contributors to the team that help lead the jacks to their successfully season.
"We definitely lost two great players, but we have more than enough capable players to fill in" Moyer said in response to the loss of Johnson and Ward.
The 'Jacks are prepared for the upcoming season. "We come out and work extremely hard during practice," freshman guard Daniel Jefferson said. When asked what Humboldt State fans can look forward to, Jefferson said, "A very good basketball team. We not only show good skills on the basketball court, but we're also a team that has a good demeanor off the court."
The 2007-08 seasons officially tips off on November 16 when they travel to take on Seattle University in the Elgin Baylor Classic. The 'Jacks will then take on St Martin's University Nov. 17.
The 'Jacks return after their two- game road trip for their home opener game against the Southern Oregon University Raiders Nov. 20 at 7:30 in the East Gym.
