Support local teachers in bargaining
Issue date: 10/31/07 Section: Letters to the Editor
- Page 1 of 1
This letter is in support of the Eureka City Schools and McKinleyville Union School District for teachers currently involved in the bargaining process for reasonable and higher wages.
Facilities and materials are useful, but a lower priority than teachers. We are fortunate to have many good teachers in our area, but how will we attract and retain good teachers unless we pay them a livable wage?
We all know that education is important. In fact it is the most important enterprise in which we engage. Children and adults alike continue to learn throughout their whole life. The issue is what and how efficiently they learn. Good education is absolutely dependent upon good teachers. We need teachers who are knowledgeable, dependable and effective. We value teachers who respect and care about their students.
New teachers coming to this area will have a difficult time ever purchasing a home at the wage they are offered. Continued erosion of salaries, benefits and purchasing power make it increasingly difficult to recruit the best. Please support the Eureka and McKinleyville Teachers' request for higher wages.
