Men's Soccer

An early lead did not hold up for the Humboldt State men's soccer team in their California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday. Senior forward Trel Mangarin gave the 'Jacks a 1-0 lead just under seven minutes into the game. Humboldt State maintained the lead into the second half, but Cal State Stanislaus scored twice in the final 20 minutes to secure the win.

On Friday the 'Jacks' defense made a statement in a 1-0 shutout win on the Chico State Wildcats' home field. Sophomore midfielder Roland Demombynes scored a goal in the 23rd minute to put Humboldt State up 1-0. Chico State did its best to get through the 'Jacks' defense, but the Wildcats' efforts proved futile as Humboldt State earned its fifth shutout victory of the season. The win, which was the second over Chico State this season, also snapped a four-game winless streak for the 'Jacks.

Humboldt State will spend the final two weekends of the season in Arcata. This weekend the team plays a pair of CCAA games at the HSU Soccer Field, beginning with a 3 p.m. showdown with the San Francisco State Gators on Friday. On Sunday the team takes on the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters at 2 p.m.

Women's Soccer

In Humboldt State's final road game of the season, the 'Jacks appeared to have a comeback victory in hand. However, the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors held off the late rally to defeat Humboldt State 3-2. Freshman midfielder Rebekah Chmura and freshman forward Kim Carroll cut Humboldt State's 3-0 deficit to one with a pair of late second-half goals. The 'Jacks wouldn't get the goal they needed to tie the game as Cal State Stanislaus defeated Humboldt State for the second time this season.

The team's game against Chico State on Friday didn't go the 'Jacks' way as the Wildcats prevailed with a 3-0 victory.

Like the men's team, the women's team has no more road games remaining on the schedule. This Friday, the 'Jacks face San Francisco State at 12:30 p.m. on the HSU Soccer Field. Humboldt State will be back in action on Sunday when they host the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters at 11:30 a.m.

Volleyball

The Humboldt State volleyball split a pair of CCAA road games this past weekend.

Saturday's game against nationally-ranked Chico State went in favor of the Wildcats as the 'Jacks were swept 3-0. Despite 10 kills from junior outside hitter Mallory Briney and 31 assists from Liz Shannon, Humboldt State dropped to 8-11 overall and 4-7 in the conference.

On Friday the 'Jacks held off Cal State Stanislaus in a 3-0 sweep of the Warriors. Each of the three matches went down to the wire. Humboldt State battled back in the first match to win 30-28. In the second match the 'Jacks held on to win 30-28. The third and final provided another Humboldt State rally as the 'Jack scored the final seven points to take the match 30-26. The win was the team's second consecutive victory.

The 'Jacks will be in Southern California this weekend for a pair of conference games. On Friday, Humboldt State travels to Cal State San Bernardino to face the Coyotes. The following day the 'Jacks will take on the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos.

Football

On Saturday the Humboldt State football team took on the Azusa Pacific Cougars in HSU's Homecoming game. In the end the Cougars came out on top by a score of 27-17 (see article on page 11).

This weekend the team returns to the road after hosting three-consecutive home games. On Saturday the 'Jacks will face the Dixie College Rebels in St. George, Utah. Humboldt State defeated Dixie College 30-22 in triple overtime earlier this season in Arcata.

Cross Country

The cross country program did not compete over this past weekend. However, this Saturday both teams will be in action at CCAA Cross Country Championships at Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock.
