Cross Country
With the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships less than three weeks away, the Humboldt State cross country program is looking to make the most of the races remaining on the schedule.
On Saturday, both the men's and women's teams faired well at the Willamette Invitational in Oregon with the two teams each placing in the top 20 in a field of Division I and Division II programs.
Jimmy Elam was the top runner for the men's team, taking 10th overall with a time of 24 minutes and 56 seconds. Elam wasn't the only 'Jack to finish in the top 25. Eric Tibbetts placed 24th with a time of 25 minutes and 17 seconds. Elam and Tibbetts' performance propelled the team to a 10th-place finish.
The women's team had a tandem of runners finish in the top 50. Megan Rolland took 45th with a time of 18 minutes and 55 seconds and Irene Graham placed 50th with a time of 19 minutes and four seconds. The team finished in 18th place.
This weekend the team will travel to San Francisco State to compete in the San Francisco Invitational.

Men's Soccer
A late rally could not help the Humboldt State men's soccer team as the 'Jacks fell to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 2-1 on Sunday. Sophomore midfielder Roland Demombynes scored in the 60th minute to cut the 'Jacks' lead to 2-1. However, Humboldt State could not get any more shots past the Broncos' defense. The team is now 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA.
Two days earlier the team was shut out in a 2-0 loss to the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes. The loss was the team's fourth shutout loss this season.
Last Tuesday, the team shutout Brigham Young University Hawaii at home in a 2-0 victory. Freshman defender Tim Haden gave the 'Jacks the lead in the 78th minute. Senior forward Jon Eseman added a goal less than two minutes later to put the game away for good.
Fans will have two opportunities this weekend to catch the team in action. On Friday the team takes on the UC San Diego Tritons at 3 p.m. at the Humboldt State Soccer Field. On Sunday the team faces the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at 2 p.m.

Women's Soccer
The Humboldt State women's soccer team continues to struggle on the road as the 'Jacks dropped their fifth consecutive conference game away from home.
On Sunday, the team fell to the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos 1-0. The loss dropped the team's conference record to 4-4 and overall record to 7-4. The loss was also the third time in the last four games the 'Jacks have lost a game 1-0.
On Friday, the 'Jacks couldn't get the offense going as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes.
This weekend the team returns to Arcata for a pair of conference games. On Friday, the 'Jacks face the UC San Diego Tritons at 12:30 p.m. On Sunday, Humboldt State faces the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at 11:30 a.m. Both games are at the HSU Soccer Field.

Volleyball
It was another tough road trip for the Humboldt State volleyball team as the team dropped a pair of CCAA games in Southern California.
On Saturday, Humboldt State faced the nationally-ranked UC San Diego Tritons in La Jolla. UC San Diego swept the 'Jacks, taking the three matches by scores of 30-17, 30-23, and 30-21. Humboldt State took early leads in the second and third matches but couldn't hang on as the Tritons rallied for the victory. Junior outside hitter Lynsey Adams led Humboldt State with eight kills. Senior middle blocker Megahn Berndt had a team-high five blocks and junior setter Liz Shannon had 25 assists.
Friday's game against the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles yielded the same result as the 'Jacks were swept 30-22, 30-24, and 30-26. Adams and junior outside hitter Mallory Briney tied for the team lead in kills with eight apiece. Briney, Berndt, and sophomore middle blocker Danielle Wells each had three blocks in the loss, which dropped the team's overall record to 6-9 and conference record to 2-5.
This Saturday the team will return to the East Gym for a brief break from the road. The 'Jacks will face the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros at 4 p.m.

Football
After tailing most of the game, the Humboldt State football team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat the Dixie College Rebels 30-22 in triple-overtime. The win moved the team within one game of .500 as the 'Jacks are now 2-3 with five games remaining in the schedule (see the article on page 22 for more information.)
The football team will be back in action this weekend in the Redwood Bowl. On Saturday Humboldt State will host the Western Oregon Wolves at 6 p.m. All Humboldt State students get free admission with current student I.D.
