Workers sprayed water on a pile of wood, insulation, random junk and metal sheets. The mouth-like shovel of the yellow backhoe devoured the debris - the remains of the University Center Storage building - and spewed it into the back of large trucks.

The building was demolished Wednesday to make way for a planned $42 million dollar housing project.

Three other houses - Spidell, Hopkins and Davis - were moved to a location on O Street, in Arcata in preparation for the project.

"We're going to put that new 432 bed complex in there," said Humboldt State's Senior Communication Officer Paul Mann.

The university got approval to start designing the complex, he said. Construction is expected to begin by late Spring 2007, after a soil test is conducted.

University Center organizations, like Center Activities, used the building for storage.
