Smooth, swirling ceramics merge with rough, earthy clays to form intriguingly beautiful bowls and other sculptures. These are the works of Lisa Searle, which are now on display in the Student Business Services Building.

Searle likes to work with ceramics and different types of clay. She says she prefers stoneware because of it's Earth tones "It's really strong, yet forgiving and has a great texture." she says.

A Humboldt State Senior majoring in Art, originally from Birmingham AL, Searle has been living in Arcata for nearly four years. She says much of her inspiration comes from nature in the area. "Patterns I see in nature seem to show in my work a lot." She said, "Stars in the sky or a caterpillars back can inspire something."

"I get a lot of inspiration from traditional designs of other cultures." she says "There's lots of shapes that inspire me there." she said.

Working with clay is therapeutic for Searle, "It's an outlet and a way to express what you see in the world." she said, "It's something I escape into, I can lose myself in it. All my problems disappear and I can just be. It's really meditative."

Searle says she tries not to follow processes too much "I try not to think and just let my intuition work. The clay guides me. The steps are dependant on where the clay is at."

"Clay comes a lot more naturally for me" she said "Drawing and painting are things I really had to work at, but clay will lead you. Clay will tell you what it can and can't do."

Cheryl Simpson, an independent artist visiting Arcata from Pacifica, CA said of Searle's work "The style is so cool. The pieces look surreal and have a psychedelic, swirling feeling to them."

Simpson said of Searle's artistic style "It seems like she's totally found her own style and she's rocking with it. These pieces really make me want to stare and study the details. They're captivating."

The reception for Lisa Searle's work will be held during Arts Arcata, Friday, April 13th from 6-8:00 p.m. in the Student Business Services Building catered by Sushi a'gogo.
