The University Police Department will get an increase in their budget they have been wanting for three years. This increase in their budget will allow them to hire one more officer and ensure that there is an officer on campus 24 hours a day.

In an e-mail, University Police Chief Tom Dewey said that even with this increase, Humboldt State will still have fewer sworn and uniformed officers on campus at all times than CSU San Marcos, CSU Channel Islands, Sonoma State, and CSU East Bay.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) searched the internet to build a case against unlicensed radio broadcast by Humboldt Free Radio Alliance in Arcata.

On Dec. 16 2007 the FCC came to Arcata asking the Alliance to stop broadcasting.

Documents that were requested through the Freedom of Information Act about unlicensed or "pirate radio in Humboldt County" from 2007-2008 shows information the FCC has about the Alliance.

This ditch is located on property formally owned by Simpson Timber Company and drains directly into Humboldt Bay. Dioxin levels in the ditch are thousands of times higher the Environmental Protection Agency standards.

Dreadlocks: functional or spiritual?

If you do not have scissors and a brush, or do not believe in using them, you might want to grow a set of dreadlocks.

This is probably why primitive cultures have worn them. Some still do wear them. But in American culture, dreadlocks are either a low-maintenance way to keep your hair or a statement of rebellion.

I wasn't going to write on the state of our election cycle another time, but that was before I realized just how many information gaps and exaggerated rumors crisscross our everyday interactions like a high-security laser grid. I don't think it's impertinent to say that most students are angry with all these twists and turns, for what I'm sure is a multiplicity of different reasons.

Dear Lumberjack readers,

I have had the experience of being the editor-in-chief of the Lumberjack this semester, and I want to thank you all for reading and thank you so much to my staff for working as hard as you have this semester. If you know anyone who works for the Lumberjack, buy them a beer! They work extremely hard, and are doing the best they can.

I'm uncertain whether it's the fundamental understanding of the Democratic Process I gleaned from elementary school, or the fact I have eyeballs, which allows me to see the discriminatory proceedings against Jason Robo for the farce that they are. The impeachment, his removal, the disciplinary hearing in which it would seem Jason had inadequate access to counsel or opportunity for defense/support - ALL "conveniently" timed.

What's the word Humboldt? I love this school and would love to represent it as your A.S. President. I have been here for a year and half and in that time I have met some really great, like-minded mellow people. When I came to check out H.S.U. it was during reggae on the river, I came to Arcata and once I saw the community forest it was all over, I knew this was the place for me.

As I listened to my principal explain the reasons he pulled Eureka High's Redwood Bark student newspaper from its news stands on April 25, I had a funny fleeting notion that I should call Howard Seemann and ask his advice. Howard, who was the Lumberjack adviser for 30 plus years, and who mentored me regarding student and adviser press rights, was unfortunately no longer answering the phone.

It would be in poor taste and would be socially irresponsible of me as a citizen of H.S.U. and one of many of your public servants to address an issue and then not offer some solution, and a logical and clearly defined plan of action. I will warn however that this task is no easy feat, as there has been an aggressive campaign on the part of the administration to blatantly spread disinformation, lies, and deception.

Let me start this off by saying that this is not an argument pummeling Jason for his beliefs. Enough of that has been done already whether I believe in it or not. This is more of an examination of what we can learn from his actions.

Jason is probably one of the most despised students by the administration in the history of Humboldt State, and how can you blame them? The dialogue he creates can, at times, become hurtful and completely derogatory.

Solving the world's problems in 96 hours or less. That is the slogan for Model United Nations, a simulation program for college students to advance their understanding of principles and means by which international relations may be maintained. Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, or other multilateral body, which catapults students into the world of diplomacy and negotiation.
